N Scale Locomotives

N Scale Locomotives

N scale locomotives are available separately in a wide variety of road names and types. Major manufactures of N Scale engines are Atlas, Bachman, Lifelike, Model Power and Athearn.

There are some features you should be looking for in an N scale locomotive to ensure that you achieve satisfactory performance. Some manufactures have developed special motors which allow the train to move along at realistic speeds. Some motors run too fast, causing the locomotive to move along at unrealistically high speeds.

A flywheel should also be part of the features listed. Flywheels allow the locomotive to come gradually to a stop, like a real train engine. Better engines will have two, preferably brass.



Another feature to look for in a good n scale locomotive is all wheel drive. Some N scale engines only have half the wheels pulling and rely on a rubber gripper wheel to provide traction. All wheel drive ensures that the engine will be able to pull cars up slopes and around curves effectively.

Repair parts may also be a consideration when you are shopping for an n scale locomotive. Some manufacturers make available motors, brushes, and other parts allowing the engine to be repaired. Some manufacturers require that the engine be returned to them for repair. If the return is made during the time the warranty is in place, usually the engine is repaired or replaced free, provided the problem was caused by faulty manufacturing.

A good n scale locomotive is an investment in your railroad and a good one can last many years if properly cared for. A cheap n scale engine will result in unsatisfactory operation.

Bachman - Lifelike N Scale Electric EZ Track Model Train Sets
One of the best ways to get started in the model train hobby is with an electric train set. Usually the toy train set will contain everything you need to get started. N model trains are easy to set up and don't take up a lot of space.

Bachman train sets are the most common sets available. Bachman has been manufacturing electric toy trains for many years. Bachman train sets will contain a power pack, EZ Track, a locomotive, and several cars. In some cases some accessories will also be included. The track included with Bachman train sets will be EZ Track. This track makes set up for the train set very quick and easy. Not like the days of snap track which was hard to set up, came apart, and broke very easily.




Bachman electric train sets are fun and easy to use. EZ track is included in each of theses train sets making set up fast and easy. N Scale train sets are small compact, allowing you to set up a train set in as little as a 25 inch diameter area. These model train sets are so cool you may want one in every room of your house! Bachman train sets are available in a wide variety of road names and themes.

Lifelike also manufactures a number of train sets. Most sets include their new N scale Power-Lock track which, like EZ Track, is quick and easy to set up. Power-Loc has it's own coupling system, so is incompatible with EZ Track.

N Gauge Model Railroad

N gauge railroading is increasing in popularity each year. An n scale model railroad looks pretty cool when it is running, the diminutive size of the trains and accessories sure to catch a lot of inquisitive looks.

At 1:44 scale, an n scale model railroad doesn’t need to take up a lot of space. A small layout can be built in a twenty four diameter circle. Human figures are about ½ inch in N gauge.

Two layout ideas for N scale would be a glass topped bar or coffee table. The table or bar needs to be designed so the inside measurement is about twenty five inches, and the glass top should be easily lifted for track maintenance and to be able to get to the trains in case of derailment.



N Scale railroading became easier with the advent of pre-mounted track. Bachman and Lifelike both make their own versions of this track and it has revolutionized n scale model railroading. The track is mounted directly to the road bed pieces which are coupled together. An n gauge train can be up and running in a very short time with this track. It can be assembled on carpet, a table, or just about any flat surface.

An n scale model railroad can be exciting and can be set up just about any where. Set one up in the family room, living room, or near your entertainment area. N scale railroading is flexible and fun.
