N Scale EZ Track

Bachman EZ Track has revolutionized the model train hobby with its ease of use and durable construction. This model train track is built right into a plastic base eliminating the need to staple or glue cork or foam roadbed down before you can enjoy running your model train. With EZ Track you simply snap the track sections together, plug the transformer wire into the terminal section, put the train on the track and move the controller arm. N scale train track was never so easy to use! N scale train track has evolved over the years. The early years of model railroading, hobbyists had to lay track similar to the method used in real trains. The ties had to be cut from basswood stock, a laborious process. The ties were glued to cork roadbed after the rail route was laid out. The stainless steel rails were then configured to the roadbed and carefully nailed in place. A track gauge was used to ensure that the rails were the correct distance apart. Track laying using this method was as much an art as a hobby.

The advent of Snap Track made the track laying process much easier and faster. Atlas is now the leading manufacturer of this type of HO scale train track. The track is pre-mounted on plastic ties in standard length. Straight track is available in a standard of 6 inch lengths, as well as an assortment of shorter sections. Flex track, which is ideal for either custom radius curves or long runs of straight, connection free track sections. Curves are available in ten, eleven and one fourth, or twelve and one half inch radius. Partial sections of 1/3 and ½ are also available. Different types of switches are also available for this track. Code refers to the height of the rails. Code 55 is the most common type available.




Model train track took a big step forward with pre-mounted track. This N scale track was pioneered by Bachman, under the name of EZ Track. This track was already mounted on the roadbed which made it easy to have a model railroad up and running quickly. EZ Track come is two different types, steel and nickel silver, as well as an array of different types of sections. There are eighteen and twenty two inch curves, different lengths of straight and crossings.

Atlas and Lifelike also manufacture similar products to EZ Track and Lifelike has an adaptor which allows EZ Track to be used with its Lock-Tite product. Atlas HO scale train track sections can be removed from the roadbed and used in a conventional layout.

N Scale Model House

N Scale Plastic Model Train Houses- Accessory Buildings For Electric Trains
N scale model houses are an indespensible model train accessory for a train layout, diorama, or architectural project. The structures are available in a wide array of building types and styles.



Plastic houses are the most common, and most of these are nicely detailed. Painting is optional, as most of the houses come precolored. Painting definitely makes the houses more realistic. Make sure you use a paint compatible with plastic houses. Regular enamels will melt the styrene plastic.

Prebuilt scale house models are the easiest, because they require no assembly. Model Power has the largest selection of these model train buildings, but Bachman also has a nice selection. These houses usually come with a light wired right into the house, so all that is required is to hook the wiring into the accessory lug on your train transformer.



You will find the largest selection of N scale houses availble as kits which must be assembled. Generally these kits are precolored, so again painting is optional. There are both snap plastic model houses and glue. The snap kits will state that no glue is required for assembly but they will benefit from some glue. Not required, but the plastic houses will stay together better.

The snap fit model train buildings usually have very few pieces and can be assembled in a few minutes time. The snap houses are suitable for ages eight and up, and are an easy build, so they make a great model train accessory for the young child with his first train set.

N scale houses in glue kits are usually a bit more challenging. Some of the German kits like Faller and Noch are very detailed. Unfortunately these kits are usually too European in style to be suitable for American layouts. But the kits are very high quality and well engineered. The main American manufacturers of model train buildings are Bachman, Lifelike, and Model Power. There are many others, but these are the most common ones available.

Most of the model train building kits do not include a light kit, and again, for most painting is optional. For the hobbyist or architech who wants a very realistic appearance, painting may be desired. But most people will be satisified with them the way they are.

N scale houses are just one model train accessory which will make your train layout more realistic and fun. There are many more.

N Scale Locomotives

N Scale Locomotives

N scale locomotives are available separately in a wide variety of road names and types. Major manufactures of N Scale engines are Atlas, Bachman, Lifelike, Model Power and Athearn.

There are some features you should be looking for in an N scale locomotive to ensure that you achieve satisfactory performance. Some manufactures have developed special motors which allow the train to move along at realistic speeds. Some motors run too fast, causing the locomotive to move along at unrealistically high speeds.

A flywheel should also be part of the features listed. Flywheels allow the locomotive to come gradually to a stop, like a real train engine. Better engines will have two, preferably brass.



Another feature to look for in a good n scale locomotive is all wheel drive. Some N scale engines only have half the wheels pulling and rely on a rubber gripper wheel to provide traction. All wheel drive ensures that the engine will be able to pull cars up slopes and around curves effectively.

Repair parts may also be a consideration when you are shopping for an n scale locomotive. Some manufacturers make available motors, brushes, and other parts allowing the engine to be repaired. Some manufacturers require that the engine be returned to them for repair. If the return is made during the time the warranty is in place, usually the engine is repaired or replaced free, provided the problem was caused by faulty manufacturing.

A good n scale locomotive is an investment in your railroad and a good one can last many years if properly cared for. A cheap n scale engine will result in unsatisfactory operation.

One of the best ways to get started in the model train hobby is with an electric train set. Usually the toy train set will contain everything you need to get started. N model trains are easy to set up and don't take up a lot of space.

Bachman train sets are the most common sets available. Bachman has been manufacturing electric toy trains for many years. Bachman train sets will contain a power pack, EZ Track, a locomotive, and several cars. In some cases some accessories will also be included. The track included with Bachman train sets will be EZ Track. This track makes set up for the train set very quick and easy. Not like the days of snap track which was hard to set up, came apart, and broke very easily.




Bachman electric train sets are fun and easy to use. EZ track is included in each of theses train sets making set up fast and easy. N Scale train sets are small compact, allowing you to set up a train set in as little as a 25 inch diameter area. These model train sets are so cool you may want one in every room of your house! Bachman train sets are available in a wide variety of road names and themes.

Lifelike also manufactures a number of train sets. Most sets include their new N scale Power-Lock track which, like EZ Track, is quick and easy to set up. Power-Loc has it's own coupling system, so is incompatible with EZ Track.

N gauge railroading is increasing in popularity each year. An n scale model railroad looks pretty cool when it is running, the diminutive size of the trains and accessories sure to catch a lot of inquisitive looks.

At 1:44 scale, an n scale model railroad doesn’t need to take up a lot of space. A small layout can be built in a twenty four diameter circle. Human figures are about ½ inch in N gauge.

Two layout ideas for N scale would be a glass topped bar or coffee table. The table or bar needs to be designed so the inside measurement is about twenty five inches, and the glass top should be easily lifted for track maintenance and to be able to get to the trains in case of derailment.



N Scale railroading became easier with the advent of pre-mounted track. Bachman and Lifelike both make their own versions of this track and it has revolutionized n scale model railroading. The track is mounted directly to the road bed pieces which are coupled together. An n gauge train can be up and running in a very short time with this track. It can be assembled on carpet, a table, or just about any flat surface.

An n scale model railroad can be exciting and can be set up just about any where. Set one up in the family room, living room, or near your entertainment area. N scale railroading is flexible and fun.
